GENERAL Wild Barfield Model CA 124M & CA 125R bogie hearth type furnace. Mft 1991. The chamber has low thermal mass insulation and is heated by heavy section strip type elements fully supported along the side walls and controlled via thyristors with a P.I.D. controller. The Bogie supports the charge and runs on rails, inc motorised load/unload. Furnace chamber is lined with a low thermal mass modules to a total thickness of 254mm. Heating elements are Kanthal Nikrothal 80 plus strip, controlled as a single zone via a 3ph thyristor unit with P.I.D. control. Multi-bladed fan assembly fitted to the water cooled shaft, 2 speed motor, high speed at temps up tp 750c, low speed at temps above 750c. The bogie is a substantial framework, the wheels run on rails set into working floor. The bogie drive is controlled on the control cubicle, travel is controlled by limit switches. Furnace door is vertical uprising and is a reinforced mild steel shell with low thermal mass module insulation and is opened and closed by means of 2 pneumatic cylinders. When closed the door is held firm to the furnace front plate by 4 pneumatic cylinders operating as clamps. Thermocouples are provided through the side wall of the side chamber for furnace control. Cooling is operated via an event on the Eurotherm 818P temp programmer. The carbon steel work chamber measuring 1535mm diameter x 1550mm high suitable for use in vacuum and is evacuated through a vacuum pumping port. Is fitted with a full opening delta-ring sealed door providing maximum access to the furnace interior. Both the chamber and the main sealing flanges are water-jacketed and fitted with baffles. FURNACE HEATER The furnace heater is produced from graphite rods arranged in a cage-type construction to completely surround the charge and ensure maximum utilisation of the hot zone. The unique design of heater cage ensures maximum access to the hot zone and the end heaters considerably enhance the temperature uniformity of the hot zone. HEAT SHIELD The “Calcarb” insulation pack is high fired at 1750°C and vacuum degassed prior to fitting into the vacuum furnace. The calcarb has a maximum operating temperature in excess of 2000°C and therefore ideally suitable for this type of vacuum furnace. Nozzles are incorporated in the cylinder body to allow a secondary 360°C cooling of the workload. WORK TRAY SUPPORT A graphite hearth rail assembly is provided to support charge during treatment. COOLING SYSTEM The charge may be cooled naturally in vacuum or in a gas atmosphere at a controlled pressure of up to 1.5bar. The recirculating fan driven by 2 AC motors, heat exchanger and connecting ducting are supplied with the furnace to give rapid cooling of the charge. The system has dual quenching arrangements for process cooling under pressure. This allows a choice of cooling direction to suit the charge shape in order to reduce distortion caused by uneven cooling. The pressure quench extends the range of materials and thickness that can be successfully hardened under vacuum. VACUUM PUMPING SYSTEM The furnace is designed to achieve an ultimate pressure in the 10-3m.bar range and in the 10-2 m.bar range when the hot zone is operating at temperature of 1250°C. Pump-down time of approximately 20 minutes to pressures in then10-2 m.bar range from atmospheric pressure with a clean dry empty chamber.
