Major assets are restored to mint condition with the help of Riley Industries Riley Industries, one of the world’s leading resellers of used surface treatment plant and equipment, has recently acted as a technical and marketing consultant on a major auction to dispose of the assets of one of Birmingham’s landmark companies. The Birmingham Mint, close to the city’s famous jewellery quarter, had been producing blanks and coins, including medals and commemorative coinage for over 200 years. It has recently gone into liquidation and the receivers KPMG employed auctioneers JFT Law and Company to find buyers for the Mint’s specialised ‘start-to-finish’ manufacturing plant, including melting, rolling, pressing and blanking equipment as well as a substantial metal finishing facility.
The Auction was held on 24th July 2003, with live internet bidding taking place on the JFT Law on-line service: Auction4u.com Riley Industries assisted in the decommission, preparation and cleaning of a range of equipment, including the chemical decommissioning of a large Barrel Plating Plant and several other specialist machines. The company also used its specialist expertise in the surface treatment sector to publicise the auction, including an insert in the Finishing magazine and a mail shot to all fellow members of the Surface Engineering Association. This targeted campaign resulted in two major assets, the Barrel Plating Plant and the Wellman Protected Atmosphere Furnace being sold to a British company for a six-figure sum. Another important disposal was of the Spalek High Energy Ball Burnishing Plant, used for blank cleaning after heat treatment, to an American company. Several other assets are making their way to Asia. These include the melting and holding furnaces, which have been acquired by a company in India, and the Bruderer high speed blanking press to Korea. Riley Industries were also commissioned by the UK company to remove the electroplating and heat treatment plants from their original location in Birmingham and reinstall them at their new factory in Manchester, including re-commissioning and testing. The Birmingham Mint itself has not disappeared entirely. With the help of KPMG, Stirchley Machine Tools and Birmingham City Council, the name has been saved and it will continue as a smaller concern specialising in the production of commemorative coins and regalia. It is also moving into the heart of the jewellery quarter, where it will become a working museum, generating income from many thousands of visitors every year. Managing Director Michael Riley believes that the success of the project demonstrates Riley Industries’ technical expertise in the metal finishing sector and the company’s ability to market and realise valuable industrial assets.
